Why Are We so Obsessed with Designer Shoes and Handbags

Buying designer shoes and handbags, or at least staring at them at stores is a favorite sport of many women. Guys usually don’t understand this addiction and often make fun of women, forgetting that shoe obsession is much less costly then their obsession with cars boats and motorcycles.

Males will never understand how good it feels wearing a pair of 3 inch designer stilettos. Good emotionally, I mean, not physically. I think it was Levende Waters who said “funny that a pair of really nice shoes make us feel good in our heads – at the extreme opposite end of our bodies.”

If we add a knockout matching designer handbag to our uncomfortable, but gorgeous designer shoes, many of us, women, will feel like a million bucks; and it doesn’t matter how much our poor feet hurt.

Some women say that they are obsessed with designer shoes and handbags, because wearing them makes them feel different and makes them carry themselves differently.

Others say that wearing high heel shoes (designer or not) makes their legs look longer and their butts more attractive.

Historically, both shoes and handbags played an important role in people’s lives. A long time ago people were identified by the shoes they were wearing. Slaves were often barefoot; peasants wore skin wrappings, sabots, or leather soles combined with leg wrappings; royalty wore shoes with jewels or decorations on them. It was inappropriate for nobility to wear the same pair of shoes to different social events. Fine shoes, sandals and boots have been a costly luxury worn by the upper classes as a sign of status.

Not everyone can afford to buy designer shoes and handbags today as well, but thanks to sales, clearances, discount and closeout stores, most of us can afford to have at least 10 pair of shoes and at least a few handbags.

I usually don’t use my energy trying to explain my shoe and handbag addiction to men. I personally like to use this energy to hunt for discount and closeout shoes. And handbags.

I have a male friend who is like that too. He is not only into shoes, but into fashion in general. Great buddy to have if you need fashion advice. ;-)
